Restless legs at night? Why the newest sleep guideline starts with iron

And the simple Day & Night routine built around it.

RLStop Journal · 5 min read

It starts when you sit down in the evening. Your legs won't stop moving. You get up, walk around, lie down again. By 2 or 3 in the morning you just want one full night's sleep.

If that sounds like your nights, there is one number worth knowing about. It is your iron. Here is why.

What the 2024 guideline says

In September 2024 the American Academy of Sleep Medicine published new guidelines for restless legs. One of the first points is about iron.

The guideline says that for adults with clinically significant restless legs, iron studies (ferritin and transferrin saturation) should be checked regularly. It suggests iron for adults when ferritin is 75 ng/mL or lower, or transferrin saturation is under 20%.

That 75 is much higher than the number used for most people. The guideline says it plainly: the iron cut-offs for restless legs are different than for the general population.

So a ferritin result that was called "normal" may still be low by the restless legs standard. Many researchers link restless legs with low iron in the brain, and iron stores in the body are part of that picture.

3 iron mistakes that waste your effort

Iron is not easy for the body to take in. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Coffee or tea at the same time. Both reduce how much iron your body absorbs. Keep them away from your iron.
  • Calcium and dairy with it. Calcium supplements and milk also get in the way of iron.
  • Skipping days. Iron stores build slowly, over weeks and months. A few days on, a few days off does not get far.

One thing helps: vitamin C. Taken with iron, it helps your body absorb more of it.

The Day & Night routine

RLStop puts this into two capsules a day.

Morning

Day capsule

Iron 65 mg (ferrous sulfate) to support healthy iron levels,* vitamin C 200 mg to help your body absorb it, and vitamin B6 40 mg. Take it with breakfast, away from coffee, tea and dairy.

Evening

Night capsule

Magnesium 250 mg (glycinate), vitamin D3 2,000 IU and vitamin E 400 IU, which support normal muscle and nerve function.* Take it about an hour before bed to support relaxed legs in the evening and restful sleep.*

Something for tonight: the Night Kit idea

Iron builds over weeks. Your evenings are tonight. That is why some people pair the routine with RLStrap, a padded foot wrap you wear in bed. It puts gentle, steady pressure across the arch of your foot. No pills, nothing to swallow. You can try it tonight while the daily routine builds.

Who made RLStop

RLStop was started by Eric. He is 35 and has had restless legs since he was 16. Over 19 years he studied everything he could find about it, to build a formula that works for as many people as possible. Helping people with restless legs is his life goal.

Be honest with yourself about timing

This is not a pill that works in a night. Iron stores build slowly, so take RLStop every day; we suggest 90 days. It does not work the same for everyone. RLStop is not for people who have been told their iron is high, or who have an iron-storage disorder.
